A Circle Within A Circle

November 14, 2025 m red

" I had the pleasure and honour to work on an audio installation component, called "A Circle Within A Circle", with Marika Swan for this show. The far larger part of the show is all of Marika's incredible and inspiring and moving work, which is also compiled into a book and is also stunning. Marika's words and philosophies are a powerful integral part of the work and overall expression, some of which are woven into the audio component. The prints and woodblocks themselves are beyond words .. just worlds of continuously unfolding emotions and creation .. depth with no sense of end. "

The show is up until January 25, at the Burnaby Art Gallery.

A Circle Within a Circle (full credits)

with musical contributions from

Ruby Singh "Shorelines" Singh invites us into the embrace of this place through binaural recordings of rolling waves, the biosonification of spruce pushing synth pads, and bull kelp bioelectricity playing keyboards filled with the song of Orca and strings.

Tarun Nayar/ Modern Biology "Swordfern in the Morning" & "Bullwhip Kelp" Recorded live by converting bioelectric impulses in the organisms into sound

Tsimka Martin and Micheal Red "Trying" & "Trying High" Sustained notes sung by Tsimka, in her home territory, then lightly tapped and shaped into a long-form melody by Michael. With intentions for clarity.

mixed & woven by Michael Red with additional field recordings from Tla-o-qui-aht
