thanks to vso new music festival

HUGE thanks to vancouver symphony orchestra for having me this past weekend at their new music festival at the orpheum theatre. was a pleasure on so many levels. loved checking out so much work by local and canadian composers, many of who were in attendence. and having my dj work so well recieved that the symphony's conductor called me "quiet tasteful actually" on stage and some of the composers and players giving me compliments .. well, let's just say that carries a different type of weight than someone flashing their lighter at a rave (which, or course, is great too!). ..might be a mix or two that results from the affair as well. cheers! and til next time!

appearing at VANCOUVER SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA's New Music Festival

Very pleased to announce that i will be DJ'ing in the lounge at the Orpheum Theatre to close out each night of next week's New Music Festival. Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Kronos Quartet, Standing Wave, Rachel Iwaasa, and others will all be performing. New works from Jocelyn Morlock and more.

I did this last year and totally recommend. Take in the main concert, then have a drink after with me blending sounds/themes from the festival with modern electronic sounds.

Special deal for those that check the site: use the promo code "VSODJRED" to purchase half-priced tickets off the website.

Maybe see you there!

next low indigo release

okpk's ep is dropping in a matter of days. a lot of folks who hands on the pre release are buzzing about it.

winnie cooper just premiered the video, exclaim did a nice little piece on it as well, undone gave it some love, and a few radio stations are doing some featured interviews on it. check the cjsw bit here while the stream lasts (next up are victoria and montreal based campus radio stations) .

cats only club to celebrate this friday at the rattle. always a good time.

available on bandcamp, itunes, juno, beatport and all other major retailers.

..as we continue

low indigo news..

momemtums and navigations have started to level out a bit for low indigo as a label now. started with the bandcamp, then moved up to some proper distro which promptly folded just a few months in, then the following re-calibration, new distro, now smoothing out and approaching glide mode there. quite soon, if not already, all low indigo releases should be available on all the major retailers like itunes, juno, beatport, etc. ..and remain on bandcamp as well.

future release schedules, mists taking shape:

in less then a month we'll have okpk's latest 'hollow' ep out, paired with video curtosy of laine butler. cats only club / ep release party for that'll be friday feb 12 at a familiar location (stay tuned).

in march will be a 4 song EP from me, '9 of cats'. long time vancouver experimental music community shaper giorgio magnanensi has created four outstanding videos for that. one is in 3D even.

and in spring, slope is putting the final touches on his debut EP for the label, with long time collabortaor corinthian on deck for the video.

preperations are being made for a compilation slotted for late spring. some familiar names to label already, and some new ones. stay tuned!

..and lastly, as a nice cherry-on-top to the new year and fresh energies that come with - just caught wind of the lovely label spotlight piece FREQ printed in september. some months later, but the timing is actually perfect. thanks FREQ!

january souns

starting to get anchored in the new year here. clouds beginning to clear. a few souns projects coming up in the near..

JAN 24 (afternoon) : a collab and bit of an experiment with Danielle Hoogenboom. ambient soundscapes paired with yin yoga at Fortune Sound Club.

JAN 24 (evening) : premiering a ambient video my friend Joe Cobden and i put together, happening at EYE OF THE STORM A/V CLUB.

and steady working on more souns releases. a remix for the brand new Subtempo Records, and other soon-to-be unannounced video and musical releases.

xx

YEARS END

just initiated a new bandcamp that i'll be feeding with older music i feel like making public. all in a fairly low key fashion, to clear out the closet for the new new next. it's still stuff i believe in and i feel is relevant to now (no "throw away" type thing).

started it off with a 13 song album of stuff i made mostly in the early 00's. have a looky listen here.

next up are some remixs i did for the band myths.

here's to 2016.

souns, mred livePA, and cats only club this weekend..

because i'm spending a lot of the time in the studio these days on the sunshine coast, focusing on releases and various other projects - i'm doing less shows in vancouver and abroad. this coming weekend i organized/accepted a string of three, so i can get a bunch done at once and then back to the bat cave...

first up, looking forward to big joy festival this weekend. i'll be doing a live souns performance on their thursday night. the fest runs from wednesday til saturday. if you're into intimate sit down ambient/experiemental/weird local live biz - this is your jam. i'm going to unearth my collection of small bells and other tiny sound objects (been years) and bring back some visuals i made a while back too (local natural world stuff).

the next night i'll be doing a dancefloor focused livePA thing at the red gate for inventor live. should be fun. the night is a variety show of sorts, a handful of vancouver livePA acts all working in their own distinct genres. everyone on the bill is great and look forward to jamming out with everyone.

aaaaand saturday night is a big one. cats only club at the rattle. kick off for the next low indigo release and a gathering of a bunch of amazing artists from different scenes all mixing and mingling and vibing out with each other. been looking forward to it for a while. follow the links. all the details are there.

thank you vancouver new music

out to VNM for their great ambient music festival this year nomadic streams. very well put together, well attended, well recieved, and such a fantastic collection of artists with a unique and special synergy. the title nomadic streams really clicked for me - every artist existing in their own very different and well-developed universes. the whole 3 days felt perfect, and it was a true honour to collaborate live with a cast of many people i've been long term fans of loscil, rafael anton irisarri, dj olive, crys cole, and people i'm newly fans of steve roden, marina rosenfeld, lawrence english.

thanks all. it was a pleasure.

souns - ambient a [DSMS002]

a tad bit late on the announce (here on the site at least), yes, but this music isn't going anywhere.

proud to say there's a new souns full length out on the new deep sea mining syndicate label run by evangelos (typist, corinthian, 1/2 of sanctums) out of calgary. you can order the cassette or buy the digital at their bandcamp here.

this one is more actual songs, compared to the sound art / edited field recordings of coastal from a month or so back. very pleased with the mastering (alchemy) and cover art (original photo from moss harvest), and just stoked to be working with a guy like evangelos on something (check his latest here. some nice moody droney stuff).

eyes closed twice from the sunshine coast night

modern math + sub div compilations

yooooo

still playing catch-up from the summer. aiming to always to put up all the important stuff up here. releases and big shows and projects and that.

two releases i haven't plugged that have happened since the site launch, from two camps that i consider family..

DIVERDOWN, a collab track between me and daega sound, for SUB DIV out of victoria.

and

FARUSHA LAKE for MODERN MATH's continuum's vol 1 comp

both are older tunes but still stand up i think, and i'm happy to have out there in an official capacity. big up all involved. love

souns - coastal

new souns thing on panospria out this week. i wrote a bunch of words about it on the release page. those should do well to explain the thing.

might be better to DL it direct from archive.org cuz the panospria page might be a little messed up.

hope some folks dig it. was a crazy time for me. you know.. un-escapable unknown bass freq's all the time is an ideal setting to stay sane in.

small bit of support from unfamiliar (thanks, folks) and a touching message from a friend (feels good to be understood): "Listened to Coastal today with my partner. She said she felt "exposed" (in a good way) and like she'd had a brain massage. I felt like I'd been "re-landed" firmly on the west coast (in a good way). I also felt like I'd been cleaned out (in a good way)! Really great stuff."

chapel sound compilation vol 1

gonna ease in and do just one drop for now, even though there's a tonne i could share (along with a few edits to the site too, ahem) ..soon. for now..

CHAPEL SOUND Volume 1 is out!

i have a tune 'moving' on there, along with pile of other local-made goodness.

exclaim and winnie plugged it a bit, but the underground reception is where the real buzz is at. it feels like a landmark for the vancouver underground somehow. there's an impressive amount of heat on there actually and it's 24 tunes strong.

out to all the chapel folks. thanks for having me on the comp. looking forward to the jam this saturday
